Greetings from Northwestern State University. I’m Chris Maggio, President of the university and one of more than 80,000 alumni of this historic school.
Northwestern became a trailblazer in higher education in Louisiana in 1884 and remains at the forefront of innovative educational and economic development initiatives in its 133rd year of service.
The university’s main campus in Natchitoches is one of the most picturesque in America, and Northwestern provides educational opportunities at other campuses in North-Central Louisiana and through its extensive online education system.

Dr. Chris Maggio, a Northwestern alumnus and Natchitoches native, became President of the university on Jan. 1, 2017.
A faculty and staff member at Northwestern for nearly 30 years, Dr. Maggio has served the university in numerous positions.
He was Vice-President of the Student Experience for two years before his appointment as President. Dr. Maggio has also directed alumni and development activities at the university and served as Director of Enrollment Services and Director of Admissions and Recruiting. He began his career at Northwestern as women’s track and field and cross country coach and assistant athletic director. Dr. Maggio has been a member of the Health and Human Performance faculty since 1988.
A graduate of Northwestern with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Physical Education, he earned his doctorate in Developmental Education from Grambling State University.
Dr. Maggio’s wife Jennifer is also an educator and a graduate of Northwestern. They have three children, Melanie, Scott and Emily.
